Commuter Spending Account

Commuter Spending Account overview
A Commuter Spending Account allows you to save on commuting costs using pre-tax dollars for eligible transit and parking expenses, reducing your taxable income. Commuter Spending Accounts usually include separate funds for transit and parking, accessible via a benefits card for convenient purchases.

Coverage
Transit funds covers daily commute expenses such as:

  • Bus, train, and subway fares
  • Vanpool and ferry services

Parking funds covers parking costs near your work location or transit stations:

  • Parking lots and garages
  • Park-and-ride facilities

Non-eligible expenses include:

  • Tolls
  • Rideshare
  • Parking that isn’t related to work

Contributions
Monthly pre-tax contribution and spending limits for 2025:

  • Transit: Up to $325
  • Parking: Up to $325

If your monthly commuting costs are more than these limits, the remaining balance will be deducted from post-tax payroll. Check the IRS limits yearly for updates.
